1977 Newspaper Clipping

Enjoy more bread. A US Department of Agriculture analysis of the 1977 report of the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs - Dietary Goals for the United States.  States that meet the recommendations of the report will require Americans to increase the quantity of bread they eat by two-thirds and the amount of other bakery products by more than one-third.
A one-pound loaf of enriched white bread contains 16 slices, each weighing about one ounce.  So, the USDA is saying a man meeting the dietary goals will eat a little more than 37 slices a week (or 5.3 a day); a woman will consume about 26 slices a week (or 3.7 a day); a child aged 6-8 years will eat 21 slices a week (3 a day); and a child aged 9-11 years will average 28 slices a week (about 4 a day), in order to meet the goal.
Of all the foods available for human consumption, grain products are targeted in the report as the most needed requirement for improving and maintaining health.
